The Boyne Valley
Newgrange went up about five centuries before the Great Pyramid at Giza, and the people who built it aimed it. On the winter solstice, light comes through a slot above the entrance and runs the whole passage to the back chamber; every other day of the year a guide does it with a lamp and it is still worth the drive. You cannot park at the mound — everyone goes in by shuttle from the visitor centre, which is why the day trip is the sane way to do it.

The Book of Kells
Four gospels on calf vellum, illuminated by monks around the year 800, and kept at Trinity College since the 1660s. One volume lies open under glass and the page is turned every few weeks, so nobody sees quite the same spread twice. Upstairs is the Long Room, two storeys of dark oak and marble busts, which is the part that ends up on everyone’s camera roll.
